2021

A large painting that was an attempt to register memories of the density and complexity of the topography of Western Newfoundland. After days spent trekking through the thick entanglement of stunted spruce trees called “tuckamore”, the sight and smell of the ocean opened up my sense of space and wellbeing.

Duane Nickerson is a Canadian artist who has exhibited his work internationally and now lives and works near Toronto. His paintings reside in public and private collections in Australia, Brunei, Canada, France, Mexico, Singapore, the UK and the United States. The works represented in the galleries span his career as a visual artist, hence there is some variation in subject matter and technique. Oil painting is his primary focus, although he uses drawing and watercolour media as a way to explore composition and gather ideas. The most recent paintings are featured in the “Trees” and “Landscape” galleries, as his current interest lies in the forms found in the natural environment.

Trees Gallery

Breath – oil on canvas – 36 x 48 inches – 2020

The thin soil of the Niagara escarpment creates an unstable environment for trees. Mighty maples standing for 60 years will suddenly collapse on a stormy night. The subterranean network of roots is exposed, the breath of the tree is gone.

The artist’s current work is represented by Abbozzo Gallery in Toronto, but older works can be found either on Saatchi Art or in the artist’s studio.
